Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code notifies platforms with more than 50 lakh users to be considered as ‘significant social media intermediaries’.

The central government has notified the new norms under the Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code of 2021. Major social media intermediaries have been required to comply with additional due diligence criteria, including the appointment of a chief compliance officer, a grievance and resident grievance officer, and a nodal individual for round-the-clock communication with law enforcement agencies. Also, all significant social media intermediaries are required to publish a monthly compliance report furnishing details of the complaints received.
