The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) clarified that there is absolutely no link between 5G technology and the spread of COVID. The office release by DoT was in response to messages being circulated in social media platforms that 5G trials or networks are causing coronavirus in India.
It said that the mobile towers emit non-ionising Radio frequencies which have very minuscule power. They are incapable of causing any kind of damage to living cells.
The exposure limit for Radio Frequency Field prescribed by DoT is ten times more stringent than the limits suggested by International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and World Health Organisation (WHO).
Last week Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) had urged people not to fall for such rumours and misinformation and emphasised that several countries had already rolled out 5G networks and people are using it safely. The testing of 5G networks has not started in India.
