Amazon joined a growing list of debt issuers by issuing its first sustainability bond. The world’s biggest company raised $ 1 billion to invest in renewable energy, clean transport, greener buildings and affordable housing. Amazon said it will be part of a new Sustainable Bond Framework. Amazon had raised a total debt of some $18.5 billion, of which the sustainability bond forms a part.
These funds will be used for private equity investments in clean transportation and zero carbon buildings. The project includes sustainable building projects and acquiring electric vehicles for transportation fleets. Amazon has pledged to power all of its operations using renewable energy by 2030 and to reach net carbon zero emissions by 2040.
